types of mobility scooter

StairliftsThere are different classes of scooter available.  Boot or travel scooters are class 2 scooters.  These scooters are for use on the pavement only and travel up to 4mph (crossing the road is acceptable).  As their name suggests, they are easily dismantled to travel in most car boots. Some more heavy duty travel scooters can take up to 23 stone in weight and range varies from 6 miles to 15 miles depending on battery size.  All our travel scooters are rear wheel drive and fitted with anti-tip wheels for safety on a gradient.  Main advantages of a boot scooter:

  • You can take them with you anywhere.
  • Solid tyres mean no punctures.
  • No need to charge the whole scooter, just the battery pack (ideal if you own a caravan or stay in hotels).
  • Easy to manoeuvre

Mid Range scooters are bigger than travel scooters and are heavier to transport.  They are supplied with more powerful batteries which provide the user with a range of 20 miles and above.  Most mid range scooters are class 2 with a speed of up to 4mph and for use on the pavement only.  Pneumatic or solid tyres are available on these models.  Main advantages of a mid range scooter:

  • Increased range
  • More leg room
  • Softer ride
  • Higher ground clearance
  • Adjustable seat
  • Lighting/rear view mirrors on some models
  • Able to use on rougher terrain

Class 3 Road scooters
These scooters are larger and equipped with much larger batteries to take them up to speeds of 8mph.  Class 3 scooters require the user to display a tax disc which is currently free of charge and organised by the dealer.  You will also be issued with a log book by the DVLA, very much like a car.  By law class 3 scooters are equipped with a switch to control the speed which is 4mph on the pavement and up to 8mph on the road.  These scooters are equipped with a full lighting kit and rear view mirrors as would be expected for any vehicle travelling on a public highway.  Features include full suspension and fully adjustable seating for a smoother ride.  Advantages of a class 3 vehicle:

  • Speed
  • Able to use on the road
  • Greater range
  • More comfort
  • More weight capacity
  • Able to use on more uneven terrain
